Getting ready for prom

in Campus Life by
Atlantic's prom flyer, courtesy of SGA's Instragram.

Atlantic Community High School students prepare themselves for prom 2017. Prom will be held at South County Civic Center Delray Beach on April 28th from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. This year, Durgin announced that the theme was based on nature. Tickets are still available for both seniors ($50) and juniors ($60) during lunch by Kevin Logan. Each week tickets go up $5.

As we all know, getting ready for prom can be very stressful and expensive. Students in Atlantic have been making preparations such as appointments for hair and makeup. Girls in Atlantic said that it may seem very simple but in reality, it takes time because we all want to look our best. The closer prom is, the more pressure we feel.

In a survey of a couple seniors, they said dress shopping has to be the hardest decision. This includes picking the color, style and size. Prices range from $100-$600; it all depends on the store. If it’s a department store, you’re likely to find a dress for a reasonable price but, if it’s a boutique, chances are the price will be higher.

On the other hand, boys have it a bit easier because it’s all about a tuxedo. They usually go with the simple black suit and accessories of a color that pops out. In some places, a tuxedo can be purchased on special for $60, but they’re usually $100-$150 (rental). Here in Atlantic, students love to go all out so guys typically rent fancy cars like BMW’s, Mercedes and Mustangs.

The class of 2017 says they are “very nervous and excited” because this is their year. Prom is something students would never want to miss. It’s a very special night for everyone, the night where students put all their worries to the side and just enjoy. Atlantic High School is ready to have some fun this year.

Millennials are abusing drugs

in News by
Teens abuse drugs
Teens abuse drugs

As teenagers grow up, they tend to “experiment” and try new things, such as drugs. Unfortunately, this experimentation can lead to substance abuse and addiction. Studies show that drug abuse is a growing problem among teens. In addition to cocaine, ecstasy and other club drugs, a recent Monitoring the Future Study showed that the six most abused drugs by teens are marijuana, Vicodin, amphetamines, cough medicine, sedatives and tranquilizers. The effects of drug abuse on teens can lead to serious consequences now and well into adulthood.

Although different drugs have different physical effects, the symptoms of addiction are similar. Some common ones are problems with the law (stealing, not following rules, breaking curfew, etc.),  problems at school (bad grades, suspension), mood swings, loss of interest in activities, drug paraphernalia, violent behavior, withdrawal, depression, poor hygiene, and missing money.

Drug abuse at any age can cause serious health effects, but teens who abuse drugs are at particular risk for negative consequences. Teens who use drugs are more likely to struggle with addiction later in life and have permanent and irreversible brain damage. Taking action early in the teens life can help prevent future abuse.

Tennessee Amber Alert: 15 year old Elizabeth Thomas disappears

15 year old Elizabeth Thomas is still missing

One of Tennessee’s ten most wanted, Tad Cummins, has been accused of kidnapping Elizabeth Thomas. She was reported as missing on March 13, and authorities issued an Amber Alert a day later after investigators discovered that Cummins was missing too. Her disappearance came after an incident that occurred on Jan. 23, when students saw Cummins giving Elizabeth “a peck on the lips” in a classroom. They both made statements denying that they kissed.

On January 31, the district gave Cummins a reprimand and told him not to allow Elizabeth in his classroom. Anthony Thomas (Elizabeth’s father) had no idea about the allegation until January 31. He confronted his daughter about it, but she said nothing was going on. “She also said that Tad was just her teacher and she was sort of a friend of his … that the girl who had made the complaints had lied,” Thomas told HLN on Tuesday.

As investigators kept researching, they found that Thomas had been searching on the internet for teen marriage. “We don’t want to go into specifics because he might still be using some of that … but suffice it to say that is an issue that we have some major concerns of because it might potentially speak to his intentions for her,” Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesman Josh DeVine said.

Elizabeth Thomas was last seen by her friend who dropped her off at a restaurant in Columbia, Tennessee. Cummins was captured on surveillance footage pumping gas nearby. Police and family are still on the look for her.

Applying for College

College application form
College application form

Applying to college may seem difficult, but it can be easier by breaking it down into a series of small steps. There are specific college admissions requirements from college to college, but the basics are mostly the same. There are a lot of parts involved, so it is good to take care of all the details the college application requires.

First, it is important to fill out the application. It is required to fill out some paperwork which will include personal information and your high school career. It is very important to be honest because colleges want to know about the student and what they’ve done. Past school records help determine how you do in an academic setting. Good grades look even better which leads to more chances to be accepted in a university.

The next step involves writing the admissions essay. All colleges require students to write an admission essay when applying. Most likely, the school will provide a variety of prompts that students can choose from. In some cases, students may be able to choose their own topic. Always proofread college admissions essay carefully.

Also, it is helpful to gather supplemental materials which may include items like a portfolio. An applicant should consider whether the supplemental materials are a good idea for your application.

Another requirement might be recommendation letters, which usually come from teachers who are familiar with the students work.

If necessary, there might be an interview for admission. Some schools will be willing to schedule a student admissions interview upon request. International students may find a student interview especially important. Some examples of schools that require interviews are Cornell and Harvard University.

The final step is receiving the acceptance letter. If the student receives an acceptance letter, he/she will have to let the school know if you have decided to accept its offer of admission.

Although it might take up time, it is important to apply for colleges on time and carefully.

Kylie Jenner’s huge success on her pop-up shop.

In the early 2000’s, Kylie Jenner was an awkward preteen with the unfortunate contractual responsibility of living out her entire adolescence on episodes of the hit reality TV show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” Now, she has done many things that have not only separated her from her family, but have helped her become more successful, one of them being the pop-up shop.

Jenner had a pop-up shop on the East Coast; these shops are short-term, temporary retail events that are “here today, gone tomorrow.”  Jenner’s shop was made to sell Kylie Cosmetics. It opened on February 13 in New York City, directly in the middle of New York Fashion Week.

The pop up shop attracted hundreds of customers. The items available for purchase included her famous lip kits and her Kylie Cosmetics Valentine’s Day collection, plus new items from her Kylie Shop line. There’s sweats, satin bombers, and more.

“I love everything about her, especially her style,” said Ana, the first person in line, who drove up from Los Angeles. “Her style stands out the most from the rest of her sisters and I admire her whole look. Today I’m looking to buy the Coco lipsticks and I also want to buy her bomber jacket.”

Overall, Jenner’s pop-up turned out to be a huge success. On her Snapchat, she talks of upcoming events that she will be hosting in the near future.

Grammy Awards Process Gets Looked At

in News by

A Grammy Award is an honor awarded by The Recording Academy to recognize outstanding achievement, mainly in the music industry. The annual Grammy Awards presentation brings together thousands of creative and technical professionals that work in music from all over the world.

There’s a process that is followed to determine who the Grammy Award goes to.

First, there are submissions. The  Recording Academy members and record companies enter recordings and music videos released during the eligibility year which they consider worthy of recognition in the Grammy Awards process.

The second part is the screening process. Reviewing sessions are held by more than 350 experts in various fields to ensure that entered recordings meet specific qualifications and have been placed in appropriate fields such as Rock, R&B, Jazz, Country, Gospel, New Age, Rap, Classical and Latin. The purpose of screenings is not to make artistic or technical judgments about the recordings, but rather to make sure that each entry is eligible and placed in its proper category.

First-round ballots are sent to voting members. To help ensure the quality of the voting, members are directed to vote only in their areas of their knowledge. They may vote in up to 15 categories in the genre fields plus the four categories of the General Field.

Final-round ballots are sent to voting members in good dues standing. The finalists determined by the special nominating committees are also included in this ballot. In this final round, Recording Academy members may vote in up to 15 categories in the genre fields plus the four categories of the General Field (Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best New Artist.)

Applying for Scholarships-What you need to know!

in Campus Life by

Scholarships is a lot like applying to colleges.  Mostly everyone starts with a large number of possibilities and cut that down to a short list of choices. Then, complete and submit applications that include essays, recommendations and lists of achievements that highlight your best qualities.

You may hear various suggestions about the best way to apply for scholarships. The truth is that what works for one person may not work for another. There are no secrets to applying. The best advice is to use common sense and follow directions.

One of the most important things about applying for scholarships is to not miss deadlines. Most scholarship applications have deadlines.

A good tip recommended by counselors is to start research early. Researching scholarships, requesting information and application materials, and completing applications all take time.

Another important step is to get organized. Make a separate file for each scholarship and sort the files by application due dates. You should also gather the items you’ll need to apply. Many scholarships ask you to send some or all of the following:

-High school transcript
-Standardized test scores
-Financial aid forms, such as the FAFSA (The Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE
-Parents’ financial information, including tax returns
-One or more essays
-One or more letters of recommendation
-Proof of eligibility for the scholarship (for example, proof of membership in a certain group)

You might also need to prepare for an interview. And if you’re competing for talent-based scholarships, you’ll probably need to audition or submit a portfolio.

If there are any concerns or questions about whether you qualify for a certain scholarship, contact the scholarship sponsor.

-Bright Futures

-Your Community Foundation

What will Obama do after presidency?

in News by

As of Jan. 20, Barack Obama is no longer the president of the United States. What will he do now? When first questioned about what he will do once his term of presidency is over, he responded: “I’m not setting my alarm. That I’m certain of. That I am absolutely positive of.” Obama said he will also use his free time to “reflect” on his eight years in the White House. “I haven’t had a lot of chance to reflect and absorb all this. I do not expect to be behind a desk a lot. I look forward to teaching the occasional class, because I was a professor. And I had fun doing it.”

On January 12, 2017 Michelle Obama had a talk show on “The Tonight Show.” “We’ve made plans for the continuation for all the work that we’re doing, so there’s already sort of strategies happening,” the First Lady told Jimmy Fallon. “But I will continue to stay involved in these issues for as long as I live. I didn’t take these on because I was a First Lady, I took them on because they meant something to me.”

The Obamas will continue to live in Washington, D.C., until their youngest daughter, Sasha, finishes high school. She is currently 16.
According to USA Today, if there’s an issue Obama has been associated with as president, the odds are he’s talked about continuing that work after his presidency.  As we all know, most former presidents have ended their terms at very old ages. For example, Ronald Reagan was 77. Obama, however, is only 55.  He fortunately has a variety of talents and former careers to lean back on.  Did you know he was an accomplished author even before becoming president?  He also enjoys being actively involved in young people and their educations, help people get jobs, and help people in less fortunate communities build business.

FLL Shooter has disturbing past

in News by

A shooting occurred on Jan. 6 near the baggage claim in the second terminal of the Fort Lauderdale International Airport. Five people were killed while six others were injured. Esteban Santiago Ruiz was identified as the suspect. Santiago was a resident of Alaska and a military veteran. He was arrested immediately after the shooting.

Santiago was born in New Jersey in 1990 and moved to Puerto Rico two years later. He spent his childhood there, went to high school, and joined the Puerto Rico National Guard. His family stated that things started changing for Santiago after a nine-month tour of Iraq.

“When he came back from Iraq, he was a different person,” Hernan Rivera, Santiago’s uncle, told The New York Times.

Santiago’s behavior changed drastically in November when he walked into the FBI office in Anchorage complaining that “his mind was being controlled by a U.S. intelligence agency.”

FBI officials confiscated the gun he had in his car and sent him to local police, who sent him to get a mental health evaluation. He was cleared, and the FBI closed its file on him and returned his handgun. He was released within 4 days.

“Or it could be post traumatic stress disorder combined with alcohol,” Anchorage neighbor Brittany Adams said.

On most media outlets there are different reactions to this situation, majority siding with Esteban. Even though this may come as a surprise, people take into consideration that he has a mental illness, which changes everything.

Dealing with the consequences of opiate addiction

The rate of women addicted to opiates is increasing.

Don’t let opiate addiction affect your baby. The use of opiates along pregnant women is a serious problem, and it is increasing throughout the world. Most women who are addicted while pregnant try their best to take the right path and stop as soon as possible. Quitting suddenly can put the fetus at a great risk and cause more harm; however, it is possible to have a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby. One of the best ways is to detox. When a woman who is expecting a baby expresses interest in opiate detox, the standard protocol is a physician-supervised methadone treatment plan. Because methadone use is not directly attributable to any known birth defects, it is widely considered the healthiest alternative. Other common opiate abuse detox medications include Subutex or Suboxone. However, due to a heightened risk of harm to the fetus, these drugs are not recommended when treating pregnant women.

What happens if opiates are still used while pregnant? Unfortunately, most likely, the person will lose the baby. Babies who are born to opiate-abusing mothers have lower birth weights, and these infants are at greater risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Opiate-abusing mothers tend to have decreased health and poor nutrition. They are less likely to get adequate prenatal care, and are more likely to abuse other dangerous substances.

Addiction affects the mother as much as it affects the unborn fetus. It can even cause the body to go into an acute state of internal tumult. If the case is severe, it can even lead to a miscarriage, premature labor, or fetal distress. These effects are typically more severe prior to the fourteenth week of pregnancy or after the week 32. That’s why doctors recommend, if a pregnant woman must go through withdrawal, she do it between those weeks and that it should only be done under close medical supervision.
