Open letter to Betsy DeVos

in Opinions/Editorials by

Dear Mrs. DeVos

My name is Bryan Diaz and I am a senior at Atlantic Community High School. I am a direct product of the public school system. I am grateful for what the public school system has allotted me, as well as the opportunities it has presented to me, such as the International Baccalaureate program. Similar to all great public systems, the public schools system always needs reform in order to move a system forward and obtain the best results for the students.

I understand the complexity of the position that you hold, as well as the weight of each decision that you make. There are not many jobs that have similar future implications than the United States Secretary of Education does. The pressure and responsibility you hold is immense, and because of this I would like to formally thank you for your service, not only to myself, but to the children of the United States.

I would like to provide you with some possible suggestions for reform from a student’s point of view of the agency you currently lead. These are many possible areas for reform that I have seen throughout my 12 years in the public school system.

First and foremost, I would say that the public education system does not provide the proper education for kids at either ends of the intelligence spectrums. Kids who are considered gifted are forced to sit through classes in which they are not academically challenged. There are also many children who have a harder time with school that are forced to sit through classes which do not allow them to get the attention that they need as a member of the public education system. These are students who are as equally deserving of a fitting education as any other student.

Another issue that I feel is prevalent in the public school system is the fact that there is an agenda of conformity being pushed upon the students. As you know, Common Core is already in 44 of the 50 states and is making the students all go along the same path. I am well aware that you do not support Common Core, and that you personally feel that it is not beneficial for the public school system. Common Core forces a mindset onto the students, in which they are forced to believe that there is only one pathway to success, and this is simply not true. Success itself is defined differently by everyone. Having a Common Core system that supports only one way of thinking does not allow students to fully express themselves.

I would like to thank you once again for your service to your country, and to the educational future of the United States of America. Although many try to continually criticize the public school system, in my opinion, it is doing a very good job at the moment but there is always room for improvement. I hope this letter will help you get a better look into the way a current student of public school system views public schools and where change could be put into place.

Respectfully,

Bryan  Diaz

100 die in Syrian weapon strike

in News by

Earlier this week, an estimated 100 people had died as a result of the Syrian regime, headed by Bashar-al Assad, using chemical weapons on the Syrian people. This caused international outrage and many heads of state came out against the Syrian regime and its supporters, Russia and Iran.

The use of chemical weapons has been banned since 1993 at the Chemical Weapons Convention, and rules have been established that prohibit the use of chemical weapons. Many times, it is even to difficult to know that the victims are being attacked with chemical weapons until you are already feeling the effects.

Although many governments have come out against chemical weapons, no one took action, until 8:40 p.m. on April 6th. The United States President Donald Trump ordered for the launch of airstrikes against a Syrian airbase.

The airstrike was a warning for the Assad Regime and for the suppliers of the chemical weapons, Iran and Russia. Not many things were damaged in the strikes and no one died; because of this it can be said that these strikes were not to harm anyone or to cause damage. The purpose of the strikes were to let Assad know that he had crossed a line, and that the U.S. was not going to stand by and watch.

The strikes received international support from many different nations with only Russia, Iran and China condemning the airstrike.

Richard Simmons goes missing

Richard Simmons is one of the most beloved celebrities in Hollywood, and he is a star who loved the limelight. He is a fitness guru who has made over 20 fitness videos and published many books. He was also the owner of the famous workout studio “Slimmons.”  He would always take pictures with fans and was constantly open to have a conversation with people about anything.  To many people Richard was considered a therapist; he would call many people weekly to discuss their issues regarding weight loss and self-esteem.

This left many people worried when Simmons left the public eye in Feb. of 2014; he stopped showing up to his workout classes, calling his closest friends and being available to his fans. Simmons left the limelight without leaving a trace. Many people called and e-mailed Simmons, but to no avail. People would even go to his house in some attempt to make sure he was okay, but anytime someone arrived, they were just met by his longtime maid, Teresa Reveles.

Teresa Reveles has been working for SImmons for over 30 years, and many believe that she is the one behind Simmons’s absences from the public eye. They had developed a rather strange relationship. When Simmons would have people over for dinner, it was not uncommon for Reveles to sit and relax while Simmons would cook and clean. This left many suspicious when Reveles was the only one who had seen Simmons in almost 3 years.

A Los Angeles Police Department officer was sent to Simmon‘s house in late Feb. of this year. Ken Becker was sent as a result of increasing public worry on Simmon’s behalf, as people just wanted to know that the beloved celebrity was doing well. The officer put the suspicions to rest after he commented on the situation by saying, “The fact of the matter is we went out and talked to him [sic] he is fine, nobody is holding him hostage. He is doing exactly what he wants to do. If he wants to go out in public or see anybody he will do that.”

Simmons recently posted a short video of him at the beach on his Facebook account. Although his account has been active with the recycling of old photos, this one seemed to have been posted by Simmons himself because the video was simply two seconds long and showed nothing but the ground. Although the video was brief, it gave his fans even more hope that the celebrity is not being held captive by his maid or severely depressed, but rather is living out the rest of his days the way he wants to – a way that makes him happy.

Miami Heat’s new chapter

in Sports by

This past free agency, the Miami Heat lost many important players, Dwayne Wade specifically. This left the Heat in a very unfortunate position leaving many to believe that the Heat were doomed for a losing season. The team resigned a few players on major contracts such as Tyler Johnson and Hassan Whiteside, and although this did not provide much hope, it was something.

The beginning of the season was difficult for the Heat as they lost many games, and it was evident that the chemistry was not there. Ever since the All-Star break, the team has only lost three games.

This is the result  of good team-play, amazing coaching and even better chemistry. The Heat are on course to make a final playoff spot, and many believe that they could possibly go past the second round because of their amazing play. Many NBA analysts have the Miami Heat as a top 10 team in the NBA.

The team is being led by Dion Waiters, a subpar point guard that came into his own this year, Goran Dragic, a past-his-prime ex-star point guard, and Hassan Whiteside, a rebounding machine with an attitude. This ragtag band of NBA misfits have come together under head coach Erik Spoelstra to be a viable and winning basketball

Barcelona makes Champions League history

Going into yesterday’s match against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Barcelona F.C. hopes of continuing to the quarterfinals seemed slim. A 4-0 aggregate deficit, (an aggregate is a sum of multiple games played to determine a winner of the overall series) had never been overcome in Champions League history since the current format was created in the 1992-1993 season.

In the 88th minute of the game, Barcelona held a 3-1 lead. This would have meant defeat for Barcelona and an end to their chances of winning the Champions League. Without overcoming the 4-0 aggregate deficit, Barcelona could not have moved on.

The miracle began with a beautifully executed free kick in the 88th minute from Brazilian striker Neymar; he placed the ball in the upper left-hand corner of the goal without leaving any hope for the goalie to block it. Two minutes later, with only injury time left, Neymar approached a penalty kick and masterfully placed the ball in the corner of the goal to make the aggregate even at 5-5.

This still would not have been enough because PSG would have received the tie breaker as a result of the away goal rule. This is a rule which breaks a tie breaker by awarding the team who has scored the most goals away from home the victory.

To win, Barcelona needed another miracle.

Once again, Neymar put the team on his back, this time carrying them to victory. He came across the middle of the field and sent a ball perfectly placed into the penalty box to be tapped into the goal by Sergio Roberto.

This gave Barcelona a 6-5 aggregate victory, keeping them in the race for the Champions League title as they move on to the quarterfinals.
