Kawaii and the rising of cuteness

in Arts & Entertainment by

The pleasures of sighting something so pleasing to the eye that you become so excited and flustered is exactly what the Japanese culture defines “Kawaii.” Kawaii has spread worldwide; it is well known considering it is used in context of art, entertainment, food, clothing, makeup, toys and even the way a person acts.

The start of everything adorably “cute” all began in the 1970s. Most teenage girls discovered a new style of writing, using what we call mechanical pencils. These pencils in particular were very different from what the Japanese culture were used to; they made the handwriting much smaller and thinner which could  then be described as childish. Today, it can be identified as comic writing, round writing, kitten writing, or even fake-child writing. Between 1984 and 1986, a man named Kazuma Yamane examined the growth of the handwriting. It is said the handwriting was brought up female teenagers themselves.

With Kawaii merchandise in the picture, the expanding trend of cuteness continued to grow. Hello Kitty instantly blew up when the innocent toy was released, a perfect example for the rising trend. Other figures such as Seiko Matsuda had women of the younger ages imitating the way she dressed and behave, portraying themselves as helpless and innocent. Not only is Kawaii influencing the younger people, but has been welcomed by people of all ages. Due to this, Seiko Matsuda has been titled the “Eternal Idol” by the Japanese. Kawaii has an impact all over the world. Women and children love it and stores such as Forever 21 widely accept the ways of the japanese culture.

After Sambora’s departure, the band had to use several different techniques, even changing the instruments that they used.

Marquis Waters is a senior here at Atlantic Community High School. He plays safety for the school football team. Marquis is a very successful student, as seen in the fact that he has straight A’s in all of his classes.  For these reasons and more, Waters has made our lists of featured seniors.

“Students should work hard, to strive for what they want and to be  determined,” said Waters. Marquis loves to play cards during his free time, specifically the game Spades. He would like everyone to understand that he is just as normal as anyone else in this school. He wants to be known as the kind young man that has a passion for school and playing football.

Marquis yearns for more knowledge in all things; he wants to participate in the sports medicine field, helping athletes that are injured with rehabilitation. One of his two football coaches, Adrian Graham, has really motivated Waters with an epigram; Graham is certain it will help Waters achieve his goals.

“All gas no breaks,” Graham said.

Taking little steps forward are more important to him than anything, rather than making mistakes that will lead him back to the start. According to Waters, excelling in everything he does is imperative. He believes that there is no room for failure in his life. “Grinding is the key to success,” said Waters. Waters will continue to give it all he can and try with the best of his ability.

Don’t Breathe exceeds movie expectations

in Uncategorized by

Three Detroit thieves, Rocky, Alex, and Money find it fun to break into the homes of the wealthy. Money finds out about a blind veteran that won a huge settlement following the death of his only child. Assuming he is an easy target, the thieves go after him in his secluded home, finding themselves trapped inside, left to fight for their lives against their seemingly helpless victim.

Don’t Breathe, a movie released on August 26, 2016, was a phenomenal film filled with suspense and plot twists, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. Considering that some say horror movies contain very predictable plots, this film is very different from others since it is unpredictable and has multiple genres such as crime, drama, thriller, and horror.

In the movie, a lot of global topics were underlined and drew people’s attention when watching it: gun control, abduction, trespassing, and murder. Realizing who was in the wrong and who was in the right is also a big deal when seeing this movie.  The film’s many plot twists certainly give a person that big “Oh!” moment. Don’t Breathe is worth seeing, and anybody who watches it will most likely enjoy themselves.

Humans cannot survive bee extinction

in News by

Bees. In all probability most people think of the worst when they hear bees being mentioned considering bees do sting and even injure sometimes. Even so, what many don’t understand is that bees play a very significant role in human survival. Not long ago, scientist discovered the enormous decreasing population of honeybees.

According to an article by Joachim Haqopian, in Minnesota, Montana, The Dakotas, Florida, California, Iowa, The Northern Plains and Midwestern states beekeepers have noticed their honeybee population dying off at increasingly swift rates.

Albert Einstein once said, “Mankind will not survive the honeybees’ disappearance for more than five years.” No other animal species help produce the fruits and vegetables humans depend on to maintain good health. The British Beekeepers Association was founded in 1874, they are fighting to preserve the lives of honey bees, teaching the importance of  bees in the environment. This  phenomenon will determine the survival of human species.

Music meets fashion: a different side of music

Starting with dark colored clothing, eye makeup such as eyeliner, mascara, and sometimes maybe even eyeshadow, musicians created a trend that lured fans in and made themselves look as appealing as they sounded. Talk about iconic! The music industry as a whole has an impact, changing the way people dress, talk, and act.

Back in the mid-70’s, the era of punk rock originated in the United Kingdom. Bands such as the Ramones, Blondie, and The Clash defined what it meant to be edgy.

In present times, artists all around the globe have influenced the way fans see fashion. When music and fashion meet it becomes an expression for some. A good example of this would be Kanye West. Everytime he releases his fashion line, “Yeezy”, most of the products sell out within weeks of being released. Many people believe the reason West’s line sells so well is because of the name attached to it, and in some ways they are correct. Kanye West is one of the most influential artists of the ‘00s. It only makes sense that some of his fans would want to dress like him.

Although he passed away sixteen years ago, Kurt Cobain still defines what the “modern grunge style” is. Most artists in the grunge rock genre dress accordingly: skinny jeans, flannels, and cardigans which create a carefree look.

Musical fashion surrounds us all and whether we realize it or not, plenty of artists shape the way their fans perceive styles. With the beautiful combination of sound and appearances, the music business continues to grow.
